The result of a dramaturgical adaptation of Verga’s novel, Capinera is a performance that crosses eras and borders, resonating today with the power of a universal denunciation.
Temporarily released from the convent’s cloistered life to which she has been forced by her stepmother and by the weakness of her father, who does not stand up for her, the young Maria returns home for a short time due to the cholera epidemic that struck Catania at the end of the 19th century.
During this brief moment of freedom, she discovers life, love, and the terrifying yet fascinating duality of human feelings. But she will be forced to return to the convent, where she will die in madness.
The protagonist’s voice multiplies into a chorus of testimonies: alongside stories of physical, psychological and emotional cages, authoritative figures also emerge, such as De André, Alda Merini, and even Pegah Moshipur, offering the audience an experience that goes beyond mere viewing and engages all the senses.
The body becomes a vehicle of both constraint and rebellion, in an intense dialogue between gesture and voice that breaks the boundaries of traditional prose theatre, making a text from the second half of the 19th century feel strikingly contemporary.
Breath becomes storytelling, movement clashes with cages—both real and metaphorical—that imprison Maria and all the “capinere” throughout history.
Free admission while seats last.
On the morning of Monday, April 13, a special performance will be held for upper secondary schools in Cefalù.
The series is organized by the association Circo dell’avvenire, under the artistic direction of Tiziana Giordano, and is held with the patronage of the Municipality of Cefalù.
